A žž State College of Nursing student who graduated Aug. 20 recently was honored by the city of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, along with her sister, for working to save the life of a woman who fell ill while playing volleyball.

For the third consecutive term, the National League for Nursing (NLN) has designated žž’s College of Nursing as a Center of Excellence in the category of Advancing the Science of Nursing Education. This new cycle of designation will extend from 2022-2026.

Campus Grind2Energy Systems Are a Key Component in žž State’s Sustainability Future
The central component of the Grind2Energy systems at žž are larger versions of the in-sink garbage disposals found in many homes. The difference is that at žž State, these units aren’t disposing of food waste, but processing it with a purpose - as the first part of a highly sustainable innovation that creates energy and high-grade fertilizer.

Wick Poetry Center Uses the Power of Poetry to Share Experiences During the Pandemic
Born from inside žž State’s Wick Poetry Center, “Dear Vaccine” gives citizens a chance to process the pandemic through poetry. The poetry center collaborated with the University of Arizona to expand on poet Naomi Shihab Nye’s poem “Dear Vaccine.” The poem became a catalyst for respondents around the world to share their own poems.

NSF Awards Grant to žž State Assistant Professor for Precision Dosing in Critical Care
Each year, more than 30 million patients receive fluid resuscitation therapies for critical care scenarios like hemorrhaging, sepsis and burns. Underdosing resuscitation strategies are inefficient at saving lives, while overdosing regimens may lead to resuscitation injuries and hypothermia. Hossein Mirinejad, assistant professor in the College of Aeronautics and Engineering, is hoping to help find the solution to dosing problems.

NSF Grant Leads to Modeling Novel Serial Robot Dynamics and Prototypes
The National Science Foundation recently awarded a two-year $198,978 grant to Tao Shen, assistant professor in the College of Aeronautics & Engineering, for the development of a compact, cable-driven serial robot that can be used in medical settings. Shen aims to build a robot with his students that will address the critical limitations that most current medical robots have.

žž State Ashtabula and Cleveland Clinic Partner to Offer Respiratory Therapy Satellite Program in Cleveland
žž at Ashtabula and Cleveland Clinic are partnering to offer an associate degree program in respiratory therapy at the hospital’s main campus in Cleveland later this year. The program provides access for participants to train for the in-demand profession of respiratory care. It also supports career growth for program graduates and practicing respiratory therapists with a path to admission for the online Bachelor of Science degree in respiratory care offered by žž State Ashtabula.
