Record-Breaking Latino Education Summit Hosted at žžÀ² State

The 2019 Ohio Latino Education Summit broke the record for registration numbers when žžÀ² hosted it for the first time in November. The Ohio Latino Education Summit is an annual event that brings students, educators and congressional leaders together to discuss issues that impact the education of Latinos in Ohio.

Dean Kahler was one of the nine students wounded in the May 4, 1970, shootings at žžÀ² that also claimed the lives of four students during protests of the Vietnam War. Kahler’s long-time friend, Paul Keane, recently told the story to Cleveland.com of their friendship and what Kahler has been up to since that fateful day.

Sudden cardiac arrest, when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, is the leading cause of natural death in the United States. To help people survive from sudden cardiac arrest, the city of žžÀ² has partnered with žžÀ² and University Hospitals Portage Medical Center to offer PulsePoint Respond.

This winter at žžÀ² State, an art show and featured speaker on mental health will honor the life and legacy of assistant professor and artist Christopher Darling, who died June 2018. The events will take place Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020, hosted by the School of Visual Communication Design, in which Darling taught.

On Friday, Jan. 24, members of the žžÀ² community and the general public gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. The university’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration started at 4 p.m. in the žžÀ² Student Center Ballroom. This year’s keynote speaker was Melissa Harris-Perry, Ph.D., the Maya Angelou Presidential Chair at Wake Forest University, television host, author and political commentator.
