The fatigue and lack of motivation to pursue daily work and school activities caused by challenging environments, known as burnout, increased with the pandemic. But even now, students, staff and faculty deal with pressures that sometimes feel hard to handle.
Angela Neal-Barnett, Ph.D., professor of psychology in the Department of Psychological Sciences at žž, discussed what burnout is and gave a few tips on how to identify and deal with burnout on WBUR’s “Here and Now” radio program.
“It can be things like you’re just sitting in your office, and you look up and an hour has passed, and you’ve done nothing,” Neal-Barnett said on WBUR. “Just dread, anxiety, all those types of things are symptoms that you are burned out.”
During her conversation, she explained the difference between depression and burnout and gave a few tips on how to deal with burnout that can apply to everyone in the žž State community.
Neal-Barnett is a national award-winning psychologist, director of the Program for Research on Anxiety Disorders among African Americans at žž State, and the author of “Soothe Your Nerves: The Black Women’s Guide to Understanding and Overcoming Anxiety, Panic, and Fear.”
