Dear žž State Students,
We hope you are having a healthy and productive summer as you begin to prepare for the upcoming academic year. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a new normal for the university, and we continue to make appropriate provisions for a safe academic year.
žž State Emergency Grant Fund
žž State understands the financial hardships this pandemic has inflicted on some of our students, and since spring, we have supported thousands of students to address their personal challenges via the žž State Emergency Grant Fund. We are excited to announce that students can use this emergency funding for technology-based needs, whether to purchase a computer, a hotspot or another technology-based item to help students succeed in the classroom. If you qualify and demonstrate financial need, these emergency funds may be used to purchase the equipment.
The fund is open to degree- or certificate-seeking students currently enrolled in the Fall 2020 Semester who have been affected by the pandemic and have emergency needs. Fund applications now include a specific option to choose technology assistance.
“The university is committed to doing whatever is necessary to ensure the continued success of our students,” said Lamar R. Hylton, Ph.D., vice president for student affairs. “Most students use the žž State Emergency Grant Fund for food, rent, utilities and other basic needs, but the fund can also be used for these critical technology needs.”
Helping Students
The žž State Emergency Grant Fund is a combination of federal funds from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) under the CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act) and the money from žž State’s own fundraising efforts. The funds are being distributed with the intent of helping as many students as possible with financial challenges.
Since the early months of the pandemic, generous donors have provided more than $1 million in emergency funding to help students. To date, more than 4,800 žž State students have been awarded a total of $6.6 million in funding, which includes CARES funding.
“We know that there will be challenges to maintain dollars in these funds in the future, so we’ll also welcome those who would like to donate to help needy students,” said Mary Parker, Ed.D., vice president for enrollment management.
