Future-Proof Your Accounting Career: How žžÀ² State’s MSA Program Integrates AI and Accounting

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the modern workplace, and with new technology, platforms, and features being released nearly every day, the future of the working world is bound to look drastically different.
At žžÀ² State, we want our students to be ready for this eventuality, so we are preparing them through thoughtful coursework that addresses the role of AI and adding it into workflows. Read on to learn about how one of our courses in the MSA program is leading the charge of integrating artificial intelligence into accounting work.
Accounting 63024 – Information Technology Audit: Controls and Analytics
In this žžÀ² State course, students apply data analytics to the audit of controls and security of accounting information systems. Elements of the course include analyzing the role of the IT audit function and applicable auditing standards, identifying system risks and examining controls in ERP systems, and addressing the needs for writing and professional ethics within the career.
To keep pace with the modern needs of the profession and address how AI and accounting are becoming more integrated, the spring 2025 semester of ACCT 63024 featured four separate AI-based assignments.
AI Lab 1 – Building a Chatbot
- This assignment tasked students with creating a chatbot web application that followed a structured application development framework in the cloud-provided Conversational AI (CAI) system.
- Students were introduced to key artificial intelligence in accounting topics, including those related to natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning.
AI Lab 2 – Training a Machine Learning Model
- This AI and accounting assignment allowed students to train a machine learning AI model on predictions for three uploaded documents that were to be processed into an integrated computer application.
- Students further explored machine learning and natural language processing concepts, applying them in a facsimile of a real-world setting.
AI Lab 3 – Working with Generative AI
- This assignment helped students better understand the foundational applications and benefits of artificial intelligence in accounting settings and within a greater business context.
- Coursework focused on generative AI approaches and included illustrative use cases to demonstrate the practical value of the technology.
AI Lab 4 – Considering AI Ethics
- This assignment helped students understand the core principles and importance of ethical practices in the use of AI in accounting so that students can apply the technology responsibly.
- Emphasis was placed on how AI ethics are implemented and coursework outlined key rules to follow during the development, deployment, use, and sale of AI-based systems.
As you can see, žžÀ² State is committed to helping students to navigate the growing world of AI and how it will impact their future careers. In the coming years, we expect to expand coursework initiatives like those seen in these labs to ensure that students can stay ahead of the curve both in their studies and in real-world settings.
Advice from Adjunct Professor John Wronkovich on Using Artificial Intelligence in Accounting
We spoke with Adjunct Professor John Wronkovich, who has led ACCT 63024, to get his take on the role of AI in the classroom and the greater accounting profession. He relayed the following to us:
- His main advice for students is to become comfortable with AI’s usage in today’s accounting and business environments. He believes that comfort begins with actually putting your hands on AI technology, experimenting with it, and having clear goals in mind, like those seen in AI Labs 1 and 2.
- He discourages the use of AI models in assignments not designed for or tailored to it, such as in case study group work. Knowing the limitations of the technology, and the ways in which the individual excels, is vital both in the classroom and in professional settings.
- He notes that for more than 15 years žžÀ² has been a member of the University Alliance program of the computer company called SAP, which is used by more than 400,000 organizations worldwide, including 99 of the 100 largest companies. SAP provides cutting-edge AI platforms for use in the classroom, so it is a vital asset in helping students better understand artificial intelligence’s role in accounting and aids them in using it within their own work.
